Pure. artistic. genius: D'Angelo |
It's been over a decade and it proved to be well worth the wait. James Brown, Fela Kuti, Sly Stone, Prince... D'Angelo is back. In a set that lasted just over two hours, D'Angelo grooved through his back catalogue of tunes from his critically acclaimed albums, 1995's Brown Sugar and 2000's wonderfully intense, Voodoo. The Virginia native had the audience wrapped around his finger from the first bar to the last. From the opener, Playa Playa to the album classics, The Root and One Mo Gin ..
The band were tighter than a leg cast. There was no room for improvement. It was like being party to a studio jam session where everything went down in one take, maintaining the looseness of the jam. It's easy to forget that D'Angelo is a musician as well as a vocalist but we were definitely reminded that he is a multi-instrumentalist equally at home on the guitar strings as the piano keys.
An intimate moment came when the band left the stage and D'Angelo was alone with his audience. He went through a medley of hits from Brown Sugar accompanied by the keyboard and the audience.
Sold out and with good reason, we all knew that we were in the presence of greatness and we were witnessing the re-claiming of a crown. The King is back. Long live The King.
